Living on Campus: Is it Right for You?

When you go off to college, one of the important things you need to consider is where you will be living. There are advantages and disadvantages to both living on campus and living off campus.

Some schools require freshmen to live on campus for the first year. Before you start deciding if you want to live on or off campus, check to see if the school will allow you to live off campus. Before you make the decision to live on campus, take a tour of the dorms and apartments the college provides. You want to make sure they meet your needs. Another thing to consider is the cost. Compare the prices off on campus and off campus housing. When you live on campus, they generally include a few things such as Internet, water, and electricity. The cost will always depend on the school, so do not just assume one option in cheaper.

If you need to go to the campus often, make sure it is easy to drive there if you live off campus. Living on campus will put you in walking distance. If you need to stay the whole year (12 months), consider the fact that on campus housing will cost more in the summer.

Decide how you will want to pay. If you get an apartment off campus, you will be paying small amounts of money monthly, while on campus you will pay a large amount of money at the beginning of the semester.

What to Expect from Online Classes

There are lots of reasons why you might want to take an online class. These courses offer a greater amount of flexibility than traditional classes and you can work at your own pace. Another great aspect about online classes is that you don’t even have to leave your home to get an education because all of the work is done on a computer over the Internet.

Online classes, however, can be quite an adjustment for people who are not used to this learning environment. So, research all of your options before starting. Elearners is a great place to start. It takes a lot of dedication and motivation to be able to stay focused and complete all of your work. Here are some things you can expect from online classes.

  • You will probably have to contribute to online class discussions on a regular basis in a forum.
  • Your only communication with the teacher will probably be through email.
  • You will have to complete weekly or daily assignments and turn them in before the deadline.
  • There will probably be a lot of reading for you to do.
  • Lessons can be in the form of videos or reading material.
  • Group projects are challenging because you probably won’t meet with other group members in person.
  • Tests and quizzes will be challenging because the teacher knows you can use the Internet and any other resources you can find.

Online classes are definitely a different experience, but you can do really well if you can adjust. If you are interested in online classes, do a little bit of research before you begin so you can know what to expect.

Taking Your First Online Class

For many, taking their first online class can be stressful. While having the option to take one’s schooling from home is convienient, it comes with a learning curve. Many online classes require more hands-on tasks in order to ensure students are learning the same amount of material they would in a regular setting.

When one first starts off with an online class, they must first log-in to their school’s online classroom platform. This platform will be where you discuss class lessons, turn in work and also read class announcements. It is your “chalkboard” persay just from the comfort of your own home.

Most class handouts will be uploaded here as well as your syllabus, where you will see what material will be covered each week and what will be expected of you assignment wise. This is your “bible” and it should be followed completely in order to ensure the best grade possible.

Learning to manuever around the online platform may take some getting used to, but by exploring the options you can learn what features are included and there to help you with your online learning. Many platform offer a forum section where you can post homework questions or even ask for a study partner.

Online classes, more then any other, require you to stay on top of your assignments. If you don’t anticipate having to study each week for your class and just turning in all your work at the end of the semester, online learning is not for you. Most teacher require post to the forum, comment on classmate’s posts and turn in homework regularly. All of these contribute to your overall grade.
